Rio Tinto (ASX:RIO) released its 2026 half year results for the six months ended 30 June 2026. The company reported underlying EBITDA of US$14,826 million, up 28% on the prior corresponding period, and free cash flow of US$3,834 million, up 75%. Profit after tax attributable to owners of Rio Tinto was US$6,664 million (up 47%), with underlying earnings of US$6,851 million (up 43%) and an underlying return on capital employed of 17%. Consolidated sales revenue was US$31,028 million (up 15%) and net cash generated from operating activities was US$9,173 million (up 32%). Underlying earnings per share were 421.4 US cents (up 42%), and net debt was US$14,061 million at 30 June 2026.

The board declared an interim ordinary dividend of US$3.4 billion, up 43%, equal to 211.0 US cents per share and representing a 50% payout ratio. Copper equivalent production rose 3% in the half, and Copper, Aluminium and Lithium together contributed more than 50% of underlying EBITDA. Rio Tinto said it had banked US$870 million of productivity benefits year-to-date and was on track for an annualised run-rate of US$1.8 billion by year-end. Chief Executive Simon Trott attributed the outcome to a step-change in performance alongside favourable commodity prices, and cited continued investment in growth projects including Simandou in iron ore and lithium. Taxes and government royalties totalled US$5.6 billion.
