the open: Trump eases tensions 🌍 ASX to jump

Company Interview22 Jan, 2026

The local market is set to recover from recent losses with ASX futures pointing up 0.5% higher.

On Wall Street, momentum, which had initially driven Wall Street benchmarks higher, ebbed into the afternoon session, with the Nasdaq giving up much of its gains. Some of the megacaps regained ground including Nvidia and Alphabet, whilst Netflix fell heavily having reported a muted outlook in its latest earnings.

Meanwhile, US President Trump has eased tensions over his pursuit of Greenland, stepping back from threats to impose tariffs, but saying a deal was in sight to end the dispute.

Oil prices have edged higher on optimism around tighter supply after a temporary shutdown at two large fields in Kazakhstan and on slow progress in reversing output cuts in Venezuela. Gold prices have continued to rise, with spot gold up 1% at $4,820 an ounce.

The US dollar index is up 0.1% on the day, whilst the Australian dollar is at US67.6 cents, ahead of December’s jobs data.
