the open: gold & silver reap rewards of uncertainty

Company Interview13 Jan, 2026

The Australian market is set for its 2nd straight day of gains, with ASX futures pointing towards a 0.3% gain at the open.

Equity investors mostly looked through the turmoil surrounding Trump and the Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell with stocks initially opening lower. However, the S&P and Dow managed to close at new heights. Financials underperformed as the US President called for a one-year cap on credit card interest rates at 10%.

Oil prices held near a five-week high with concerns Iran may reduce exports during a crackdown on the biggest anti-government demonstrations in years.

The gold price rose above $4,600 per ounce. Silver also reached a fresh peak as investors piled into safe-haven assets.

The USD dollar fell as Fed independence was called into question, whilst the Sterling rallied against the US dollar on Monday, alongside the euro and the Swiss franc. Meanwhile the Aussie dollar extended yesterday’s gains.
