The local market is set to open modestly higher with ASX futures up 6 points. This comes as global equity markets rose overnight, while oil prices surged after the Trump administration imposed sanctions on major Russian energy companies.
On Wall Street, investors weighed up mounting geopolitical concerns with positive earnings results, with sentiment improving on confirmation that President Trump will meet Chinese President Xi Jinping next week. The major indices finished positively.
President Trump and Chinese President Xi will meet next Thursday on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit. The meeting in South Korea will be the first face-to-face since President Trump took office in January and comes ahead of the tariff deadline he imposed on China early next month. Oil prices surged around 5% to a two-week high following the US imposed sanctions on major Russian suppliers.
The US dollar index is up 0.1% on the day, whilst the Australian dollar is at US65.1 cents. Locally today Reserve Bank governor Michele Bullock will speak on last week’s unexpected increase in the labour market.
