US political ructions have reverberated across the world, unnerving Australian investors ahead of the US government shutdown, which is now in effect.
The S&P/ASX200 initially rose but then weakened across the day to end just 0.04% lower at 8,845.70 points.BHP fell 2.5% amid conflicting reports that China has temporarily banned purchases of the miner's iron ore shipped from the Pilbara. Fortescue appeared to benefit, lifting 1.4%.Meanwhile, lithium stocks were sold-off on reports that Chinese authorities have approved the restart of two major lithium mines. PLS and Liontown Resources led the losses, down 6.4% and 10.7% respectively.
Gold stocks resumed their ascent before losing momentum with bullion reaching another record. Northern Star rose 0.8%.
At the smaller end of the market; wealth management software company Bravura Solutions jumped 19% after upgrading its FY26 earnings guidance.
And DroneShield shares surged a further 23.2% as more investors get onboard the counter-drone technology specialist after recent defence contract wins.
