Despite a strong start, the S&P/ASX 200 gave back some gains to finish 0.25% higher at 8,969.80 points.
The copper miners buoyed the market, with the red metal hitting a 16-month high. Sandfire Resources gained 5.9% while BHP finished higher by 2.7%. The rare earths players also rode on some momentum amid news China is restricting exports. Lynas Rare Earths gained 5.4%.The banking sector proved more resistant however, with CBA shedding 1.1%. In company news, Elders was down 1.2% on the takeover of Delta Agribusiness, with the competition regulator noting it is unlikely to provide a competitive edge. And Guzman Y Gomez slipped 2.4% after a share buyback and store openings. Looking forward, central bank Governors Jerome Powell and Michele Bullock are due to speak tonight and tomorrow respectively.
