Key Points:

Australia risks falling behind as an AI creator without rapid infrastructure and skills investmentData accessibility and quality are viewed as key barriers to successful AI adoptionNetApp supports clients like AGL (ASX:AGL) and Healius (ASX:HLS) in advancing healthcare and energy sector AIOngoing capital expenditure must translate into meaningful productivity improvements

Australia faces the risk of being consumers, rather than creators in artificial intelligence without rapid advancements in data infrastructure, cyber resilience and workforce skills, according to George Kurian from NetApp. Kurian highlights Australia’s early move into cloud technology, emphasising the importance of building on this foundation to progress AI development. He sees NetApp playing a critical role, supporting clients such as AGL (ASX:AGL), Healius (ASX:HLS), and the Children’s Cancer Institute by helping organise and secure their data for advanced AI use cases, such as healthcare analytics and early cancer detection.

Kurian points out that 85% of AI projects reportedly fail due to data access issues, suggesting the main challenge is the quality and readiness of enterprise data. He maintains that effective AI strategy hinges on integrating data across organisations, maintaining strict privacy and sovereignty controls, and providing seamless access to stakeholders. Investments in data centre infrastructure and the creation of a robust nationwide data backbone are presented as essential, complemented by AI-focused skill development in the workforce.

Despite global competition, Kurian regards Australia as keeping pace with international trends, especially in enterprise AI adoption. He praises the nation’s balanced regulatory approach, aiming to foster innovation while protecting stakeholders. Kurian also references AGL’s use of AI to boost productivity, cut costs, and achieve better customer outcomes.
