Aussie investors cautious on global jitters

Company Interview24 Oct, 2025

Key points:

Market sentiment remains cautious due to global macroeconomic and geopolitical uncertainties Pilbara Minerals (ASX:PLS) sees robust numbers despite heavy short interest Corporate Travel Management (ASX:CTD) faces scrutiny over suspended trading and governance questions Positive outlook for Zip Co (ASX:ZIP) at current prices, with strong US exposure and buyback plans Sunrise Energy Metals (ASX:SRL) gains attention with a major scandium supply deal and sector volatility

Henry Jennings from Marcus Today observes a cautious tone in Australian markets, attributing it to global uncertainties such as the delayed US CPI release, an upcoming Federal Reserve meeting, and geopolitical events involving China and the US. Jennings states that volatility in commodity prices, particularly gold, is keeping many investors on the sidelines, with most looking to the weekend with measured expectations. Jennings notes that recent profit-taking in Newmont (ASX: NEM), following a strong run and now increased capital expenditure, reflects the broader cautious sentiment in the gold sector.

Jennings also points to Pilbara Minerals (ASX:PLS) as a compelling example of market sentiment, highlighting that 17.5% of shares remain shorted despite rising production, increased pricing (up 20%), and declining costs (down 13%). The company reports a robust balance sheet with $850 million in cash, leaving Jennings questioning the rationale for remaining short. On Corporate Travel Management (ASX:CTD), Jennings finds the ongoing trading suspension concerning, despite apparently solid quarterly figures, including a 6% rise in revenue and 29% lift in underlying EBIT, due to uncertainties around governance and delayed results.

Turning to Zip Co (ASX:ZIP), Jennings expresses renewed interest after initially selling ahead of results, noting US peer headwinds but viewing the current $4 price as good value, especially with the strengthened share buyback. Sunrise Energy Metals (ASX:SRL) also receives attention due to its volatility and its significant scandium partnership with Lockheed Martin.
