Australia enters the global AI race with the launch of its first sovereign AI inferencing node, as detailed by David Keane, chief executive of SCX.ai. Keane states that SCX.ai is dedicated to enabling high-performance, energy-efficient AI compute for enterprises, governments, and the defence sector. The company claims that its focus lies in preserving vital resources, such as energy and water, while providing the necessary capacity for the growing demand in AI applications.

Keane points out the forecasted surge in AI compute needs, predicting a 115-fold increase by 2030 and highlighting that global data centre power demands may double to over 945 terawatt hours within the same period. SCX.ai aims to meet this challenge by deploying an AI factory using next-generation ASIC chips, which Keane says are considerably more efficient than traditional GPUs. The company has established its first operational node at Equinix SY5 in Alexandria, and customers are reportedly starting to benefit from this energy and water-saving infrastructure.

Looking ahead, Keane emphasises continued expansion, responding to strong customer demand in Australia and the broader region. SCX.ai intends to scale its AI infrastructure to support a diverse range of enterprises and government clients aiming to harness advanced, responsible AI solutions.
