The S&P/ASX 200 seesawed on Monday, to finish 0.14% lower to 8,816.10 points.

Investors weighed conflicting signals from peace negotiations between the US and Iran. US President Donald Trump indicated he could potentially restart the war with Iran if the Strait of Hormuz remained closed.

However, investors remained hopeful of a ceasefire, with the energy sector dropping 0.49%.

Negative sentiment sent big miners like BHP and Fortescue lower. The diversified miner shed 1.7% over the session.

Meanwhile gold shone brighter, with Evolution Mining gaining 3% today.

Heading in the other direction, the tech sector was being dragged down by WiseTech.The stock tumbled 17% amid news founder Richard White is being investigated by the AFP over human trafficking.

In other corporate news, Inghams shares fell 4.8% as the poultry producer locked down its WA farms as a biosecurity measure, following the detection of a strain of avian influenza.

Elsewhere, Metcash dropped 2.8% after saying its net profit fell slightly for this financial year.
