Australia’s sharemarket closes marginally lower as geopolitical tensions and rate uncertainty keep investors cautious, according to Jimmy Jang from GBA Capital. Jiang views the energy sector as the standout, with oil’s recent spike driving strong interest in names such as Karoon Energy (ASX:KAR), Woodside Energy (ASX:WDS), Santos (ASX:STO), Beach Energy (ASX:BPT) and New Hope Corporation (ASX:NHC). Defence exposure is also a key theme, with Jiang pointing to strong demand for DroneShield (ASX:DRO) and Electro Optic Systems (ASX:EOS) amid heightened Middle East tensions.,

Jang highlights Karoon Energy as one of the most heavily traded stocks among clients, citing leverage to higher oil prices. He also flags growing interest in financials, suggesting that increased cash realisations from gold and precious metals profits are boosting deposits across the major banks and cash management accounts. In Jiang’s view, investors are cautious heading into weekends given the risk of sudden geopolitical escalations.

Looking ahead, Jang adopts a bearish near-term stance, preferring to “cash up” and watch inflation and rate expectations. He sees potential upside in bonds if higher oil prices feed into inflation and delay or reverse expected rate cuts, while warning that gold producers and explorers could face further pressure if rates rise and capital markets become more demanding.
