The Australian sharemarket closed at a four-week high Tuesday, as traders returned from the Easter long weekend with a risk-on tone.

The S&P/ASX200 closed higher by 1.7% to 8,728.8 points, after opening firmer by more than 2.2%.

 

With tensions in the Strait of Hormuz persisting, oil climbed to US$111 a barrel. Those gains boosted local energy players Woodside and Karoon Energy, which rose 2.5% and 2.8% respectively. 

 

Tech stocks outperformed, with heavyweight Wisetech up 3.4% and Xero climbing 1.7%. NEXTDC added 12% after announcing a $1 billion 100-year hybrid raise to fund data center expansion.

 

Although it was Guzman Y Gomez posting the day's strongest gains, satisfying investor appetite, as network sales topped over $345 million dollars for the third quarter of 2026. Shares added 18.6%. 

 

Elsewhere, CSL announced its US product sales won’t be subject to new trade tariffs, sending shares higher by 1%. 

 

Tonight, markets assess US President Trump’s looming deadline for a deal to end the Middle East conflict.
