truce tremors

Market Wrap09 Jul, 2026

The US military launched fresh attacks on Iran today following President Donald Trump’s statement that the ceasefire is over. Flared Middle East tensions weighed on local investor sentiment this Thursday with the S&P/ASX200 dipping 0.3% to 8,762.5 points.

The International Monetary Fund further dampened the mood, downgrading its 2026 growth forecast for Australia to 1.9%, down from its previous forecast of 2%.

The materials led losses across the index, dragged down by Rio Tinto which slid over 3% as Morgan Stanley said it preferred BHP for long term copper exposure.

This comes despite talks of hundreds of workers at BHP's Port Hedland iron ore operations potentially walking off the job next week in a strike over labour disagreements.

Elsewhere, Telstra rebounded 1.2% as CFO Michael Ackland denied yesterday's disruptions were caused by a cyber attack.

In other company news, Fletcher Building has lifted its operating earnings guidance for FY26 expecting earnings before interest and taxes between $400 million and $403 million Kiwi dollars. The share price rallied 7.5% over the session.

And a new kid on the block... the biggest IPO of 2026 so far hit the boards, with FDC Consolidated soaring on its debut.

Tonight, US unemployment data is set to be released.
