A positive lead from Wall Street amid renewed optimism around US-Iran peace talks sent oil prices lower and equities higher on Thursday.The Australian market registered its biggest one-day gain in six weeks with investors also buoyed by the prospect of interest rates remaining on hold following an unexpected jump in the jobless rate to 4.5%.The S&P/ASX 200 rose 1.5% to 8,621.7 points.Real estate was the strongest sector led by Goodman Group which rose 3.3%.The gold miners benefited from a stronger bullion price with Greatland Resources rising 5%, although Northern Star fell 2.4% on the announced departure of its MD. Mining giant BHP rose 3%.The financials also added strength to the broader index, with NAB up 2%.Weaker oil prices weighed on the energy sector with Woodside Energy falling 2%.James Hardie added to the previous session's gains, rising 7% following its full-year results.SGH reaffirmed its FY26 guidance bu ended in the red; while Zip jumped 3.4% after securing the right to continue using the Zip brand in Australia.And SkinKandy debuted on the ASX, finishing the day's trade higher than its IPO price.Tonight, Walmart's earnings will provide further insight into the state of US consumers.
