the open: ASX to slide after mixed Wall Street session

Company Interview19 Aug, 2025

The local market is set to open lower with ASX futures down 0.3%, as global equity markets ended mostly flat overnight with investors focused on the outcome of a meeting between President Trump, Ukraine's President Zelenskiy and European leaders.

It was a mixed session on Wall Street in which the major indices were mixed as investors looked ahead to the Federal Reserve's Jackson Hole symposium at the end of the week.

President Trump has told Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskiy that the United States would help guarantee Ukraine's security in any deal to end Russia's war, although the extent of any promised assistance was not immediately clear. European leaders, who accompanied the Ukrainian leader at a meeting at the White House urged President Trump to insist that Russia agree to a ceasefire before any talks can advance.

The US dollar index is up 0.3% on the day, meanwhile the Australian dollar has fallen back below US65c. And bitcoin is lower at $16,500.
