Global markets remain gripped in uncertainty with Iran launching fresh attacks across the region while the US looks to deploy 3,000 troops to the Middle East. The local market is set to add to the previous session's gains with ASX futures up 0.6%. US Treasury yields extended gains while Wall Street's indices fell in a volatile session as investors considered the economic impacts of the war amid conflicting reports of negotiations between the US and Iran. US President Trump says the United States is talking to "the right people" in Iran in order to reach an agreement to end hostilities. Meanwhile, Iran has circulated a letter to member countries of the International Maritime Organisation saying that “non-hostile vessels” can transit the Strait of Hormuz. Oil has rallied with no progress made on resuming the flow of crude out of the Middle East while Iran’s foreign ministry is quoted as saying it had, “taken necessary and proportionate measures to prevent the aggressors and their supporters from exploiting the Strait of Hormuz to advance hostile operations against Iran.
The US dollar index is up 0.5% on the day, meanwhile the Australian dollar has fallen to US 69.9 cents.
