The S&P/ASX200 finished the session in the green rising 27.70 points, a gain of 0.3%.

 

The local market was pushed higher by gains in the tech and consumer spaces, while the miners were again in the red.

 

An ANZ-Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence barometer showed an uptick in the first week of the year. The consumer discretionary space rose 0.6%. 

 

Nine Entertainment jumped 5.6% on news it's set to appoint former Foxtel executive Amanda Laing in a new role with responsibility for broadcast operations.

 

IDP Education was among the best performers after Macquarie upgraded it to an 'outperform', saying uncertainty around Education policies are already priced in. 

 

Shares in 4DMedical leapt 14.7% upon receiving US regulatory clearance for its artificial intelligence-led diagnostic tool.

 

The tech sector offered a positive performance with its 1.5% gain.

 

But the materials sector hindered further market gains as the price of iron ore remained in a downward trend. BHP was down 0.7% while Fortescue was close to a 5% loss. However, Capricorn Metals went in the other direction to rise 2.2% after the company posted its highest quarterly gold production result for 2024 in the December quarter.

 

Wednesday's trade will bring additional consumer data with the CPI for November, in addition to the job vacancies report for this month.
