the COB: Commbank crash

Company Interview13 May, 2026

The Australian share market fell for a fourth consecutive session, dragged lower by a plunge in Commnwealth Bank shares.

The S&P/ASX 200 Index lost 0.5% to close at 8,630 points and now is back to where it began the year.

Investors also dialled back their risk as they digested the federal budget and assessed the impact of changes to capital gains tax and negative gearing on property. Those changes are expected to put downward pressure on property prices and bank lending.

CBA shares fell 10.2% after posting an unaudited quarterly cash profit of about $2.7 billion, which came in well below market forecasts.

The resources sector defied the sell-off as the copper price jumped to a record high sending BHP shares up 2.8% to another record.

Aristocrat Leisure shares surged 13.3% on a solid first-half profit while expanding its share buyback program by $1 billion.

CSL sares stemmed the bleeding after two days of heavy losses, however Ramsay Health Care fell almost 1% on expectations that the budget could weaken demand for private hospitals. And Healius plunged 22% after lowering its full-year earnings guidance.Elsewhere, Temple & Webster lost 5.6% after downgrading its FY26 guidance.

Tonight, US producer price inflation is due; along with Eurozone 1Q GDP and unemployment data.
