Mark Thompson of Talga outlines a significant move as the company enters the US battery anode market by securing a strategic agreement with United Catalyst Corporation. Thompson highlights that while Talga’s current focus has been on developing its Swedish project for the European market, this partnership marks the first step in expanding battery material production facilities into the US, capitalising on the country’s increased focus on supply chain security and local manufacturing. United Catalyst’s 30 years of experience in automotive recycling and deep relationships within government and regulatory environments position Talga to accelerate entry into the fast-growing battery and electric vehicle sectors in South Carolina.

Thompson states that graphite, crucial for lithium-ion batteries, is currently sourced almost entirely from China, creating supply vulnerabilities. Talga’s technology, proven in Sweden, enables effective recycling of graphite from used batteries, transforming it back into battery-grade material. By collaborating with United Catalyst’s established logistics, permitted sites, and automotive contacts, Talga aims to streamline operations, reduce costs, and advance the circular economy in battery materials.

He points to extensive growth across markets, including the US, Europe, and potentially Australia and the Middle East, suggesting Talga (ASX:TLG) is positioned as one of fewer than five companies outside Asia able to manufacture anodes. Thompson sees major opportunities as critical mineral supply security becomes an urgent priority for governments and industries globally.
