SpaceX FOMO: Millennial mania drives demand for IPO

Company Interview12 Jun, 2026

Key points:

Strong SpaceX IPO interest led by Australian millennials and Gen Z Unusually large retail allocation seen as potential blueprint for future mega tech IPOs Purcell flags valuation and extreme volatility as key risks for new investors

Kylie Purcell from Stake states that Australian retail investors show unprecedented enthusiasm for the SpaceX IPO, particularly younger cohorts. Stake survey data, according to Purcell, indicates 51% of Australians want exposure to SpaceX, with interest rising to 72% for millennials, 62% for Gen Z, 38% for Gen X and 19% for baby boomers. She suggests Elon Musk’s track record with Tesla and SpaceX, plus years of watching reusable rockets succeed, underpins strong engagement and a sense of FOMO as the company finally lists.

Purcell highlights what she views as a highly unusual feature of this float: a reported c.30% allocation to retail investors via platforms such as CommSec International, around triple the typical level. She argues this could set a template for future mega IPOs such as OpenAI and Anthropic, potentially giving Australian retail investors earlier access to global technology names.

On valuation, Purcell notes concerns that SpaceX’s near US$1.8 trillion market cap demands exceptional revenue growth, pointing to Goldman Sachs’ forecast of c.90% annual growth over five years and comparing it with Nvidia’s lower historic growth rate. She emphasises elevated volatility risk, urging investors to size positions conservatively and consider whether they could tolerate a 20–50% drawdown.
