An early surge on the Australian sharemarket cooled as the session wore on, as conflicting signals around US-Iran peace talks unsettled investors.
Despite a 1.3% surge on the open, the S&P/ASX200 ended the day higher by 0.16% to 8,379.40 points.
Following an 11% drop overnight, oil retraced partial gains over the session climbing back above the US$100 a barrel threshold. At home, heavyweight Santos shed 2.6% bucking the rebound in crude prices.
Equity gains were led largely by the materials sector, with the sector up 3.2%. BHP gained 3% along with Rio Tinto, which climbed 2.2%.
In company news, Myer's first-half sales rose 24.5% after a record Black Friday, although the positive report wasn’t enough to sway investors from the broader selloff, seeing the stock slip 0.1%.
In the C-suite, Aussie Broadband co-founder Phil Britt has resigned as a non executive director; its share price rose 1.6%.
Tonight, the US Flash Manufacturing PMI is released as investors continue to monitor US President Trump’s threats on Iranian energy infrastructure.
