Key Points:

Market reaction to AI in SaaS appears exaggerated, creating opportunities for selective stock pickingAustralian economic growth forecasted below trend with rising interest rates and potential new taxesMiners and healthcare seen as defensive plays amid local slowdownCommodities like copper and aluminium highlighted for their global demand and supply dynamics

Alexandre Ventelon from Morgan Stanley observes that recent volatility in tech stocks, particularly within the software-as-a-service (SaaS) sector, has triggered outsized market reactions. Ventelon describes the market’s response to advancements in AI, such as the release of Anthropic’s legal plugin, as leading to a broad sell-off of SaaS stocks. In Ventelon's view, not all technology or software companies are equally vulnerable to AI disruption and the rise of generative AI is expected to ultimately expand the sector’s total addressable market, enhancing productivity and creating more opportunities. Ventelon points to valuations in the sector trading significantly below five-year averages, seeing a phase where individual stock selection carries more significance than sector-wide moves.

Turning attention to Australia, Ventelon expresses an underweight stance relative to global markets, particularly due to recent Reserve Bank of Australia rate hikes and the likelihood of increased taxation. Australian GDP growth is forecasted to slow to 1.7% this year and next, with discretionary and retail sectors expected to feel pressure as economic growth decelerates.

Within the ASX, Ventelon favours miners and healthcare, given their historical performance during periods of slowing growth and resilient inflation. Specific attention is given to commodities, such as copper and aluminium, with diversified miners (ASX:BHP, ASX:RIO) being top exposures due to ongoing global infrastructure and data centre demand.
