Medibank's growth prescription for a healthy profit

Company Interview20 Aug, 2026

Key points:

Medibank (ASX:MPL) posts higher profit, strong Medibank Health performance and an increased fully franked dividendKoczkar cites disciplined growth, higher claims payout ratio and $300m returned in “value” to membersCost‑of‑living pressures, competition and rising aggregator costs seen as key challenges and focus areas

Medibank (ASX:MPL) reported a 2.9% rise in underlying net profit after tax to $638.8 million, with its health division profit rising more than 31% on the back of growth in wellbeing, primary care and community health services. A fully franked dividend of 19.2 cents a share represents what CEO David Koczkar describes as a payout towards the top end of Medibank’s 75–85% target range, which he frames as part of a long‑term, through‑the‑cycle value strategy for both customers and shareholders.

Koczkar highlights cost‑of‑living pressures as a key headwind, noting more customers are downgrading cover, yet he points to continued industry growth, especially among under‑30s. He states that Medibank focuses on “disciplined growth”, balancing volume and margin while maintaining a claims payout ratio above the industry average. Around $300 million of “value” is said to have been returned to members, with 57% of policyholders supported by health and wellbeing programmes.

On competition, Koczkar is critical of rising aggregator costs, claiming they have almost doubled in two years and may encourage commission‑driven churn rather than net industry growth. He argues that true comparison currently only exists via the government website and calls for aggregators to face the same cost scrutiny as hospitals, insurers and medical professionals to help relieve premium pressure.
