The S&P/ASX 200 edged lower this session, closing down 0.23% to 8,766.40 points, amid low trading volumes as many parts of the country observed the ANZAC Day holiday.

Energy stocks declined as reports emerged that Iran has offered the US a proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Meanwhile, Origin Energy downgraded its FY26 earnings guidance for Octopus Energy, citing UK regulatory changes and adverse weather. Shares fell 5.1%.

Materials helped support the market, with gold miners in the green. Newmont rose 6.5%.

In corporate news, Atlas Arteria surged 13.4% after receiving a takeover offer from IFM.

In tech, Megaport gained 5.6% as its subsidiary Latitude secured a three-year US$25 million compute and storage contract. NextDC also opened the retail entitlement component of its capital raising at $12.70 a share, targeting around $500 million. Shares were 2.3% lower.
