Jarred "xeros" in on his top tech picks

Company Interview17 Sep, 2025

Jarred Rubin from Blackwattle considers the current environment for Xero (ASX:XRO) as presenting both challenges and opportunities. Rubin highlights that global concerns about artificial intelligence disrupting established software models have triggered a significant underperformance in the technology sector, particularly software, with Xero’s shares dropping roughly 20%. Additionally, he points to Xero’s acquisition of Melio, a US B2B payments player, as a source of uncertainty with some investors wary about the price paid and the company’s ability to break successfully into the US market.

Rubin suggests, however, that the current weakness in Xero’s share price offers an attractive entry point for quality-focused investors. He views the Melio acquisition as a potential inflection point, enabling Xero to expand in the lucrative US market and broaden its offering from accounting to payments for small and medium-sized businesses. Rubin also sees the launch of Xero’s AI solution, ‘Just Ask Xero’, as a move that could improve the efficiency of accountants and business owners, using Xero’s strong data security and historical data as a competitive advantage.

Commenting more broadly, Rubin points to other Australian technology names like WiseTech (ASX:WTC) and Zip (ASX:ZIP), stating that large tech companies are well-positioned to harness AI-driven cost efficiencies and international growth.
