Market Wrap01 May, 2026

A global share market rally snapped the Australian equity market out of its longest losing streak since 2018. After eight straight negative sessions, the S&P/ASX200 bounced 0.7% higher to 8,729.8 points.

Strong US earnings and falling crude prices helped buoy investor sentiment, despite renewed threats of attack from both the US and Iran.

The local resources sector was the strongest performer led by BHP and Rio Tinto, while the gold miners also rallied with Newmont rising 2.24%. Liontown rose 12.4%, and Paladin led the uranium miners higher.

Energy stocks were mixed as Woodside Energy fell 1.5%, while Whitehaven Coal added 3%, and surging fuel prices prompted Qantas to cut its domestic capacity with its shares rising 1.1%.

Coles rose 4% despite flagging price rises amid escalating input costs and weaker consumer sentiment.

ANZ fell 2.5% after reporting a higher first-half profit of $3.78 billion, while warning that higher inflation and interest rates will impact customers.

And ResMed lost 3.4% on a modest earnings beat in the March quarter, while missing growth expectations in the Americas.

Tonight, the US oil majors release their earnings and next week the RBA delivers its interest rate decision.
