Key points:
Budget and rate backdrop seen as forcing a shift towards revenue-backed micro caps FirstWave Cloud Technology (ASX:FCT) viewed as a compelling contract-driven opportunity 1414 Degrees (ASX:14D) seen as promising but still in the “story” phase pending revenue
Federal Budget shifts focus from ‘stories to substance’ in micro caps, according to John Athanasiou from Red Leaf Securities. Athanasiou states that tighter tax settings and rising interest rates make it harder for speculative names to gain traction. He argues investors now need exposure to small caps and micro caps that generate revenue, win contracts or show a clear pathway to cash flow, as reduced retail participation may further constrain liquidity.
Athanasiou highlights FirstWave Cloud Technology (ASX:FCT) as a standout opportunity. He points to a recent $1.85 million government contract win, noting this is significant relative to FirstWave’s roughly $10 million market capitalisation. In Athanasiou’s view, the deal provides proof of concept, improves credibility and may open the door to more government work. He also cites the prospect of a potential major contract in Mexico with a telecommunications partner as a key upside catalyst.
Another name on Athanasiou’s radar is 1414 Degrees (ASX:14D), active in decarbonisation. He characterises its recent share price run as more “story” than “substance”, driven by the launch of an aerospace and defence division focused on silicon-based drone batteries. Athanasiou prefers to watch for tangible revenue before taking a position.
