Cracking gas to clean up steel

Company Interview29 Jul, 2026

Glenn Corrie, managing director and chief executive of Hazer Group (ASX:HZR), outlines how the company is commercialising its methane pyrolysis technology, which converts natural gas into clean hydrogen and graphite at the same time. Corrie states that producing a valuable graphite co-product alongside the hydrogen is central to the economics, and claims the process can compete on cost with conventional hydrogen production without the need for carbon capture.

Corrie explains that the technology has strong synergies with steelmaking, an industry he notes is responsible for more than 8% of global carbon emissions. He points to Hazer's selection as the clean hydrogen and graphite technology provider within M Resources' bid for the Whyalla steelworks, and says a strategic alliance with global engineering group KBR, together with a long-term gas supply agreement, helps de-risk delivery at commercial scale.

Looking ahead, Corrie says 2026 priorities include converting its pipeline of opportunities into licensing agreements and projects, progressing its Canadian project toward execution, and expanding graphite offtake across industries from steel to low-emissions concrete. He adds that Hazer Group (ASX:HZR) is building what he describes as a multi-product licensing platform designed to generate upfront fees, royalties and recurring revenue as plants are deployed globally.
