The S&P/ASX 200 leaped 1.39% higher to 8894 points on Monday, its biggest one-day gain in six weeks, after President Trump called a halt to almost two weeks of airstrikes on Iran and Tehran agreed to pause hostilities as Oman works to broker a peace deal.
Miners were higher, supported by gold stocks. Evolution Mining jumped 1.94% after agreeing to acquire Carnaby Resources for about $213 million.
The tech sector was the strongest, up 4.5%, with WiseTech rallying 7%. Energy lagged, however, with Woodside shedding 2.9% over the session.
In other company news, Swedish private equity group EQT lifted its takeover proposal for Perpetual to $22.50 a share, sending the stock 3% higher. Myer fell after warning that a sharp slowdown in consumer spending late in the financial year forced heavier promotional activity and hurt margins.Overnight, US earnings include AstraZeneca and Welltower.
