Optimism around an end to the Middle East conflict quickly diminished this morning after the US launched fresh strikes on Iranian boats and missile launch sites.

With Wall Street closed to observe Memorial Day, the S&P/ASX 200 fell 0.39% to 8,657.80 points.

Oil markets ticked up in wake of the developments following a 7.15% dip the prior session. The local energy sector was lower by 1.14%.

Elsewhere, coal miners gave up recent gains. Heavyweights Yancoal slid 3.6% while Whitehaven Coal gave up 4%.

Although it was the stock market operator ASX recording the largest losses across the index, slumping 12.4% as it forecast an 18-21% jump in 2027 expenses. By contrast, Fisher & Paykel Healthcare surged 9.4% as net profit after tax rose 24% in its latest earnings report. And Kogan.com rose following a trading update.

In other company news, Goodman Group recorded a total portfolio value of $87.1 billion in its quarterly update.
