ASX holds steady despite earnings misses

Company Interview20 Aug, 2025

Key points:

ASX 200 consolidates despite earnings misses from CSL and James Hardie Rotation out of US tech giants Nvidia and AMD amid regulatory and valuation concerns Crude oil prices may move lower if geopolitical risks ease Bitcoin and Ethereum exhibit profit-taking, with important support levels in focus

Tony Sycamore from IG shares an analysis of current market trends amid a volatile earnings season. Sycamore highlights the initial strength of the ASX 200 (ASX:XJO), followed by a stall linked to disappointing reports from companies like CSL (ASX:CSL) and James Hardie (ASX:JHX). Despite earnings-driven setbacks, Sycamore suggests the ASX 200 is holding up well, consolidating its recent rally and maintaining crucial support levels. If the index can stay above 8750, Sycamore expects further upward movement towards 8900, though profit-taking could occur at that level. The prospect of Reserve Bank of Australia rate cuts and a rise in consumer confidence to 98.5 also offer optimism for Australian equities, particularly consumer discretionary stocks.

Sycamore notes a significant rotation out of US tech stocks on the Nasdaq, such as Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) and AMD (NASDAQ:AMD), driven by concerns over high valuations and regulatory developments, including export taxes to China. He observes that while the Nasdaq has enjoyed robust gains, it faces technical pressures and risks further declines if critical support levels are breached. Meanwhile, rotation into blue-chip Dow stocks is viewed as a safer haven given ongoing US economic resilience.

In commodities, Sycamore expresses optimism for lower crude oil prices amid easing geopolitical tensions and hints at continued downward pressure on gold. Regarding Bitcoin and Ethereum, Sycamore points to recent profit-taking but identifies key support levels as critical to watch.
