ASX volatility intensifies amid leadership changes, valuation challenges and persistent economic uncertainty, according to Jason Todd from Ten Cap. Todd points to recent senior management exits at CSL (ASX:CSL) and ASX (ASX:ASX) as adding significant risk, with succession and operational challenges now front of mind for investors. He highlights CSL’s dramatic de-rating, as its price-to-earnings multiple dropped from 42 times to just 18, suggesting its valuation now sits lower than many banks. For ASX, ongoing regulatory issues and the complex CHESS replacement project fuel ongoing doubts around transparency and operational continuity.
Turning to major banks, Todd singles out Commonwealth Bank of Australia (ASX:CBA), noting that despite persistent sell recommendations, investors continue to accumulate the stock. He frames reporting season as a “deliver or die” moment for the market, stating that companies meeting expectations can still be rewarded even at higher valuations, but those that disappoint face severe punishment.
Todd identifies heightened market volatility driven by shifting valuation bases, Australia’s diverging economic path, and rapid interest rate increases from the RBA. He sees defensive sectors such as banking benefitting from rotation out of high-growth tech and software stocks, but cautions that tightening financial conditions and the strengthening dollar will result in a narrower equity market upside.
